monday tidbits
also my sister posted this website that you can find out what the billboard #1 song was the day you were born. mine was "le freak" by chic. awesome. at least i've heard of it. ah well, kind of a fun little distraction.
other than that, weather's a lot nicer today than for the cubs/sox game yesterday. heath and i braved the frigid temps for the first 7.5 innings. after pierzynski's grand slam, we decided that was enough and we should head for the train. it was one of our better decisions, as it was getting dark in the west and by the time we got back up to evanston and turned the game on the tv, a rain delay was in progress. apparently the heavens opened up and just duh-umped rain on the field in the top of the 9th. glad we missed that part and stayed dry. cold was bad enough; cold + soaking wet would've been miserable. dumbfounding that the weather was so great saturday (shorts and tshirts) and is great today, but when we have $$$ tickets to a ballgame, late november decides to stop by for a day. sheesh. love that chicago weather!

jeans that fit
just in time for mother's day
Tired, overwhelmed women often feel as if having a baby causes their minds to turn to mush. Not so. In her book, The Mommy Brain, Katherine Ellison cites research showing motherhood makes women smarter and more mentally agile.don't know if it's true or not, but it was pretty interesting and i thought i'd pass it along.

at least i didn't wait until tomorrow...
...
uh... so, her parenting approach (gotta love the irony of her being in front of the mother's day cards) is for strangers to indirectly teach her brat kid lessons, so that she doesn't have to actively discipline him? right. the second i would've stepped on that kid's ankle, the woman would have been completely on my case for hurting her precious little angel. i was so shocked by her statement that i lost all focus on finding a card (not that i had any anyway trying to not step on her kid). so i relocated to another picked over section to search for cards that weren't too lame. finally had success, but needed to take an advil when i got back to work (partly due to inexplicably awful traffic today).
i've seen "passive" parenting before and been annoyed by it, but this was a new twist - a parent coming out and basically saying that she was indeed not actively parenting and was actually hoping that a stranger would step in to motivate a change in her child's behavior. wow.

what the hot?
i'm back
i managed to post my pictures on photobucket for the time being, but bear with me as they are pretty much out of order and not all clearly labeled. i also failed to rotate them all so they are oriented the same way, but most of them should be fine to check out.
everybody is so sad to see me back at work, and they feel bad that i had to cut the trip short, but i'm really okay with it. i still got to see a lot of really cool stuff and had a good time while i was there, so no need to feel like i missed half my trip or anything. coming home was the right decision. i would've been in pain and frustrated with my bike if i had stayed this week, too.
now that i'm back, i need to start really getting ready to move and going through all my stuff, throwing out/selling/giving away stuff i don't need or use. i also need to prime my walls back to white before i move out. rather than waiting until the last minute to take care of that stuff, i'm going to kind of spread it out over a couple weeks, maybe painting a couple nights a week, taking care of one room or so at a time. that should make it a lot more tolerable.there is also a bunch of stuff to look forward to, as well, over the next several weeks. a couple of cubs game, a kane county cougars game, camping in warren dunes over memorial day, the corporate challenge, possibly a show or two at ravinia and probably some other things i'm forgetting.

t-minus however many hours
i'm posting the travel plans below so it's readily available if anybody wants to check and see where i am on any given day (not that more than two people read this). i'll try to come back in one piece and hopefully will return vaguely resembling myself, perhaps just a fitter, more toned up (especially in the legs) version. i'm going to do my best to keep a reasonably detailed journal that includes the daily highlights and how much ground we covered. the idea is that we will be cycling somewhere around 30-50 miles per day. i hope i can keep up with pete!

geja's cafe
it was a very nice place, very dimly lit (no lights, only candles), and had a nice atmosphere, which was enhanced by the guitarist playing during dinner. upon being seated, we were informed that we were in the most romantic booth in the whole place, which i can't argue with. it was definitely tucked away, quiet, and cozy.
the food was great. we started with a nice bottle of wine. then out came the salads and cheese fondue (yummy). the huge platter with our dinners was next. seafood (yuck) and steak for heath, and chicken and steak for me, plus 8 different sauces and lots of veggies, all ready to be cooked in the oil. it was a lot of fun and although it didn't look like a ton of food, i was definitely full.
then dessert. flaming chocolate fondue. first you roast marshmallows in the flame from the liqueur that had been poured over the chocolate and lit on fire. then, you dip bananas, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, cherries, and the very very best thing - poundcake - into the chocolate. it was amazingly good. we were glad we didn't arrange to do anything after dinner; we were able to just relax and felt bloated (but in a good way) for the rest of the evening.
not cheap, but definitely worth it, not that i really get to decide that since i wasn't the one paying. :P i would love to go back someday.
run, chamberlains, run
mindy tried her first run this morning, but despite how it went (:P), she is still excited and hopeful. hopefully the blog serves to keep us all encouraged when things aren't going as well as we'd like. can't wait to cross the finish line with them!!

i enjoy fishing, but diving in murky water and trying to find random holes to stick my hands into to see what i find (and hope against hope that it's a catfish) ... well, that just doesn't sound like fun. plus i like my fingers.

i was able to easily fit everything in my panniers and also everything including my panniers into a suitcase, so i should be fine even with the added few items. i'm planning on carrying my backpack on the plane and then just leaving that behind with my suitcase and bike case when we head out on our bikes.

sharing/wallpaper
update: i just checked the website for the wallpaper. the price is 199 euros (per baan van 9 meter). i'm not expert in translating dutch, but i'm guessing that comes to about $265 for a 30 foot roll. yikes. maybe if i had a super duper narrow wall... or am i just that clueless about wallpaper costs?
sidebar: i've found on my design pages that there has recently been a ton of cool stuff coming out of the netherlands and/or done by dutch designers. guess i was just born into good taste. ha!

tooth tech
saw this article about how scientists are trying to make a drug dispensing system that goes in your mouth. the idea is to get it small enough that medications would be released from a fake tooth. i'd never heard of anything like this before, but i can see the value of it, since studies show people have a hard time taking their medications on time. if it were on a time release right in your mouth, you wouldn't even have to think about it. the article says you would have to take the tooth out to have it refilled (i wouldn't want to be that pharmacist). i wonder about taste, too. pretty interesting. if you don't have a fake tooth already, would they take out a real tooth to put in the drug dealer tooth?
we feel fine
it's pretty cool to click through. you basically go to the webpage and open the applet. from there you can click on the various parts and see individual sentences that people have written, or pictures, or look at distributions of the feelings based on mood, gender, geography, etc. the website also has information on the project itself and the various pieces of the applet.Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved.
The result is a database of several million human feelings, increasing by 15,000 - 20,000 new feelings per day.
it's a really interesting project. for how impersonal the internet can be or seem to be, this really humanizes it. you can click on any dot in "madness" and catch a glimpse into that person's life. what a creative way to bring it all together. it's very likely that things i have written have been pulled into the database. it's kind of like the post secret blog, but more granular, if that makes sense. some are a lot deeper than others, some are dirty, some are funny, some are sad. definitely worth checking out.

the far away aunt
here's a link to an article i found and an excerpt:
Unfortunately, in the typical family today, extended family members are not always within easy visiting distance, perhaps not even in the same state or region of the country. Some of the people you wish could be close to your baby may be able to see her only rarely, when either they or you drive or fly to visit. Between visits, it is up to you to help your child remember the relatives and to help both the relatives and the child feel close to one another. Keep your relatives informed about your child's development; letters, phone calls, pictures, and video and audio tapes help. Show your child pictures of the relatives, use their names often, and tell stories about your childhood that include them.given that i rarely settle for the minimum, i suggest taking things a step further... mindy should wear a mask of my face around lucy for a minimum of 1 hour per day, preferably during her happiest moments. i don't think any voice manipulation will be necessary, since we've been told we sound fairly alike, at least on the phone. so, mindy, get on that. i expect lucy to greet me with "hello aunt kelly" when i arrive on friday. hehe ;)

my blogging has fallen off as of late, and not because i'm any busier than usual. i just haven't found anything worth writing about. and given the fluff i usually come across, that is quite a strange situation to be in. hopefully i can find something at least moderately entertaining to post this afternoon. perhaps i'll share some of the exciting goings-on in grand rapids this weekend! hehe

in the feature, they mentioned another pair of reef flip flops that i think is much less "out there." these have a bottle opener built into them, so you can pop open your beers on the beach without worrying about locating or messing with a "real" bottle opener. kinda clever. good conversation starter. both types are horribly overpriced.

who's the big winner?
i was embarrassed to win so much, though! i got my name drawn out for one thing, then i won some game thing for the other thing, then they called my raffle ticket for another thing ... i think i turned red when they drew my raffle number. i had just joked to the girl next to me that i would about die if my ticket was drawn. all in all a fun night! now it's time to eat dinner and go to bed.
take that riaa
it's interesting to see this study contradicting a notion that is generally accepted to be true and that makes logical sense (if people are downloading music, they avoid having to buy it, therefore sales decline). i'm curious as to whether this study gets any sort of larger scale publicity. i doubt it given that findings that oppose the interests of powerful/influential/$$$ groups tend to get buried, or at least delayed or ignored... *cough cough* did you know cigarettes are bad for you?!... did you know that big oil related stuffs cause environmental distress?!
it is only one study, though, and if you know how to appropriately interpret research findings, you would generally want an entire body of research before feeling comfortable making any sort of conclusive/confident statement. anyway, the riaa can easily shift their argument to focus more on the "intellectual property" aspect than the loss of revenue side of things.
i like coming across research that suggests that what we assume to be true may actually not be. it shows the value of going ahead and investigating relationships between variables, even when you are pretty sure you already know what you will find. you never know when you will be surprised and possibly motivate important changes that were not even considered before.
that being said, not all research is really that pertinent or practical or earth shattering, but it sure can be entertaining/intersting! (go ahead, click... you know you want to.) i didn't read any of them, but one title that caught my eye was daniel oppenheimer of princeton university's report: "consequences of erudite vernacular utilized irrespective of necessity: problems with using long words needlessly." oh you clever tigers.
michigan beer
While at Bell's, Bueltmann worked for years to win one of the three tap handles at the Green Mill, the storied Uptown jazz club. Bell's Amber Ale eventually replaced Bass ale and the club became the brewery's top account.now how cool is that? i had no idea that new holland had such a prestigious tap! go holland! and to think, i recently heard a couple tell a horror story of a visit to tulip town (granted, they were there with no car...on a sunday, and anybody who's been to holland knows that's a recipe for boredom). hopefully this article can serve to debunk any rumors of holland's overall uncoolness (at least on non-sundays)!
Bell, a regular at Chicago bars during his frequent trips to town, stoked his reputation by buying rounds at the Green Mill for everybody drinking his beer when he walked in the door.
Now New Holland's Mad Hatter India Pale Ale pours from the tap once held by Bell's.

ouch!
i don't know what i'm going to do when i'm in ireland -- i'm already dreading missing the episodes for those two weeks! do you think they show it over there?! hehe
i came across this website earlier in the week, but couldn't spend time reading it at work. i'm definitely into the show and try to figure some things out, but it's amazing how much thought people put into it! even now when i have time to focus, i get exhausted just reading people's theories on various aspects of the show, which says a lot given my tendency to overthink most things!
slow afternoon
yesterday afternoon i got to take our new "policy quiz." yeah. they created this pseudo-person named policy pete with his own dummy email account and little cartoony pictures of him all over the building. yesterday we all received an email from pete providing us with a power point presentation that went so far as to include "clever" (note the quotes) little things interspersed between the pages describing each of 11 policies we were to cover. ugh.
after you sit through that (and you would think that they would've given pete a better voice - oh, yes, my friend, there was audio - but i digress), you email pete to let him know you are ready for the quiz and he sends you a link to the quiz and to the policies. ugh.
then you read through the policies and answer the multiple choice questions, which (of course) have some "funny" (note the quotes again) options interspersed. oh, did i happen to mention ugh?
after submitting the quiz, you get yet another email notifying you that you will be receiving a gift. hooray. so today i got a little combination lock thingy with the company name on it. i've already managed to screw up the combination, so now i can't get it open. ugh.
overall, it seemed like a lot of effort went into this in an attempt to make it less onerous a task, but in the end, it just made it that much more unbearable... i couldn't help but feel like it was a bad day in kindergarten...

breathe...breathe...
i checked the status of my passport application today, and the estimate is that i should receive my passport "on or around" april 17. my flight to ireland is on april 28. that's pretty close if you ask me. i'm glad i got the application in the mail as soon as i did, but i wonder if they bumped me back a bit to get to people who were travelling sooner. maybe they are being conservative in their estimate, too, and things are going out a little more quickly than that. i have to admit my heart rate went up a little at the thought of it not being safely in my possession well before my trip. i'm sure it will be okay, but i want it now...
of all the years to decide to renew my passport (which i could have done at any time in the past three or so years), i pick the time that passport applications are probably at their peak due to the new rules requiring passports for flights to mexico, canada, and all those other places. whoops! at least i'll have it handy for all those impromtu trips to exotic lands that i'm sure to be taking. har har.

ice mice ice cube tray. you can make ice cubes shaped like little mice. they even suggest holding the tail to stir your drink with the mouse, and they point out that it will "cool down your drinks much better than a real mouse would." see why i love this site?! plus everything i came across was super affordable (for example, the ice mice tray is $4.99). this could be an excellent source for gifts when you haven't got a clue what to get somebody. definitely worth clicking around.
